More Than Worth The Wait

A masterpiece, plain and simple. But while it proved instantly addictive for me, I fear that it may take a little bit of getting used to for others, and lot of people just plain won't get it. In fact, this is as album is as good as anything Matthew has ever done and one of the best albums ever to be release, period. The heavy instrumentation (is that even a word?) and the "Wall of Sound" used in some of the songs provide a richness of sound that is a real treat. The songs run the gamut from the slow and sad "Hide" to driving rockers like "Faith in You" and "Split Personality." The stand out tracks include Millenium Blues, If Time Permits, Faith in You, Future Shock, Split Personality, What Matters, and Write Your Own Song, but the best of them all is the mini-opera, "Thunderstorm," a song which is actually several songs cleverly wove in one that absolutelty awe-inspiring. The art of Mathew Sweet has only improved with time. I was a bit worried that he would keep going in the direction he had on Blue Sky on Mars (good album, but not his best), but he went somewhere very different, and the result is fantastic. If you listen carefully, you can tell how things from his previous works have come together in this one like threads woven into a rich tapestry of sound and lyrics. My hat's off to you, Mathew.
