I think the people who tend to downplay the importance and quality of Matthew Sweet's music are the same who applaud and rush out to buy remakes of David Bowie tunes by Jakob Dylan's Wallflowers. In Reverse is stunningly original, even in Sweet's diverse canon of albums from the 1990s.

It should sell millions. It won't. Artists like Matthew Sweet aren't really made for these times, which is why so many people harken back to Girlfriend as "the good old days". When pop-alternative was alive and not overrun with skinny white kids nasally rambling on about their juvenile deliquencies.

In Reverse is the stuff time capsules are made of. It reminds us that music should be full of sound, experimentation, not tied down by record executives just out looking for the "next big thing."
