Mayhem

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

The fog is here again, that will complete this funeral...

Definitely lives up to the hype. I got into Mayhem via Cradle Of Filth and the difference is staggering. Those riffs are some of the creepiest ever written, and the solo in "Freezing Moon" ranks as one of my favourites. I must say that Hellhammer's drum performance was better on "Grand Declaration Of War", but Attila Csihar's vocals are also excellent, and come up well in comparison to Dead's earlier efforts. The production is huge and intimidating and black as hell, which is helped by the way they mixed down the bass lines.

Bottom line; this album is one that proves virtuosity is not always necessary to make a really great record.
