Very Best Of Meatloaf

Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts!

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Most of you who own this album know that these title words are from the new trak "A Kiss is A Terrible Thing to Waste" which may be the best song ever written by Jim Steinman. What can you say?

The song really has two parts. The last part features the words "tire tracks and broken hearts, its all we're leaving behind", which features Bonnie Tyler. The song has more of a theme than any other Meat number I've ever heard.

My take on that theme is that the past is the past. Learn from it, and move on. But treasure every moment ("you'll have to pay for it later, if you don't get it when its going for free). The song obviously has beautiful music and is performed well by Meatloaf.

One of the other new songs, "Home by Now/No Matter What" is also beautiful in a haunting way. But, am I missing something or is this a medley of two incomplete songs? Either way it is great. The third new one, "Is Nothing Sacred Anymore" is not sacred and is somewhat weak.

Whenever a greatest hits album is put together, not everybody will agree with the selections. I don't think "Heaven Can Wait", "Dead Ringer For Love", or Midnight at the Lost and Found" belong on this album. With the latter, it may have been that Steinman though each album needed one song.

"For Crying Out Loud" from the original Bat is painfully missing. I would have liked to have seen it hear replacing "Heaven Can Wait". Many songs from "Dead Ringer" and "Bad Attitude" would have been nice additions, but there can only be so many songs on an album.

Might Jim Steinman and Meatloaf add some more of the classics and make a box set (with at least a few more new songs)? All in all, this is the best Meatloaf album ever, as it should be.
