Megadeth

Countdown To Extinction

A decidedly groovy album!

I will say this at first: I am biased. Megadeth are one of my favourite bands, and always have been. This, in my opinion, comes in at Number 3 of their albums so far. It is a GREAT album, and, although it has a few weak points, the pros definitly out-weigh the cons, as far as I'm concerned. The rhythm guitar parts, as usual, are amazing. Dave Mustaine comes out with some of the best riffs I have ever heard. The leads are good, but nothing amazingly spectacular. The bass parts are humble, but always fit (I'd rather a simple bass part that fits the song perfectly, than the most finger-frighteningly fast and complex bass solo that just doesn't sound right at all), and the drumming is great. The vocals are very much debatable. Dave Mustaine has a voice that you either loathe completely, or actually like. I, personally, like it. I do not care for Dave's lyrics. However, some of the lyrics are quite good. Following is not my opinions on all the songs (because I would be taking up a lot of Amazon.com's storage space if I did so), but instead, my thoughts on what I find are the high points of the album

Skin of my Teeth is a fast, rocking song with a great riff. The lyrics are about failed suicide attempts. Aside from the morbid subject, that Dave seems to actually take a comical slant to, it's a great song.

Symphony of Destruction is another very good song. Slow, dark and heavy. The lyrics are quite good, even though that kind of thing has been done to death.

Sweating Bullets is a great song. It's also the first Megadeth song I'd ever heard. It begins with a slow, melodic riff, and has a very catchy verse and chorus. The song is about multiple personality disorder (not to be confused with schizophrenia), and has more amusing lyrics.

Countdown to Extinction is a fantastic song. It's not amazingly heavy, but its melodic chorus and progressive song structure is fantastic.

Ashes in your Mouth, as far as I'm concerned, is one of Megadeth's finest moments. This song is damned near flawless. Probably the band's most progressive song ever, this song is brutally heavy, melodic and is very angry sounding. As far as I'm concerned, this song is a must for anyone who likes metal at all.

This is a very good straight metal album, but is nothing more than that. However, Metallica Jr., err, Megadeth, has never been, and will nev [ ... read complete review ]
