A lot of people simply abhorred the album because of the change and different style that Megadeth approached. These guys have completely revamped their music, but still in a strange way, reminisce on the old days in which thrash metal was the norm. Listening to the album, you have to appreciate the artistic approach the band is incurring and respect them for how they chose to move towards it. Each and every album produced by a band has to serve a purpose. The first two albums, the "thrash" metal ones, were pit in a period of anger in Dave Mustaine. You can feel that. Then that anger simply grows tired. They become too loud, too fast. There simply isn't any rhythm which the songs carry themselves on. This changed with Rust in Peace, which was an amazing album. The method followed in Countdown to Extinction and portrayed amazingly in Youthanasia. You have to point the songs in "Youth" had the meanest drum beats ever. These pointed the transition phase of MD to what they are now. Cryptic was completely different, had some fast songs, such as She-wolf, but you have to point out that the album was different.

RISK comes out as a huge test for the fans. Whether they are going to accept the band for what they have become or hate them. There are no real thrash metal bands these days. The whole genre does not exist. People learn to adapt to their changing surroundings and so did MD, though they still retain the roots and you can still feel that they were once a heavy metal band. The greatest that has ever existed.

These new songs just don't want you to headbang, they want you to feel the music and rhythm. They want you to appreciate the lyrics and sing. These songs push you and inspire. They draw on that inner anger, but are more focused.

In other words, these songs are the best produced songs by MD. I expect a bright future for these guys. And no, Megadeth has never ever tried imitating Metallica. Just listen to any of their albums, back to back.
