I have neglected to purchase any Megadeth albums since the release of Youthanasia, and for good reason. Megadeth has attempted to find a mix of melody and hard hitting rifs, and failed miserably. Until The World Needs A Hero that is. Right from the start, Megadeth hits hard with the melodic, yet heavy Disconnect, a song much more like the Megadeth of the mid-90's. If you enjoy the Rust In Peace Megadeth of the early 90's, Return to Hangar is a nice memory jolt, as are Recipe For Hate.....Warhorse and Moto Psycho. Burning Bridges, The World Needs A Hero and 1000 Times Goodbye are all complicated, yet melodic hard riff tunes that make your heart beat.
The only disappointment in the album are the weak, Metallica-esq songs Promises and When. Dave Mustaine has made a career of complicated, somewhat ODD lyrics combined with fast guitar. In these two songs, it's as if Mustaine has taken a page right out of Low Man's Lyric or Mama Said, minus the good lyrics and voice.
Overall, The World Needs a Hero is an excellent album. Not the best Megadeth album by far, but still five stars on the scale of New Metal vs. Megadeth.
