Megadeth

The World Needs A Hero

Thank God...kind of.

I was very skeptical about even bothering with this album considering the last 3 (full length) albums from Dave and Dave have not been very "metal" as far as I'm concerned. Not saying they were bad albums, just not my "speed", if you catch my drift. But, in a brilliant marketing ploy, the face of Boney Vic on the cover lured me in once again.

I gave the CD a shot and I have to say it...um...rocked? It didn't make me want to bang my head like Rust, So Far and Peace, but we all know those days are gone. What it did have was a cocky edge to it that has been lost in Mustaines latest "nu-metal" attempts. I have to give him a little credit, his song writing and playing ability have not diminished in the slightest. It's just the songs represent something different than it did in the late 80's/early 90's. Course...it is 2001, isn't it?

Let me put it this way, there isn't a song on here that I hate (unlike Risk and Cryptic Writings which had some really bad, bad, BAD songs). But, none of them really stick out as "OH MY GOD HE'S BACK!" type tunes. I won't be trading this disc in.

Side note: The lack of Nick Menza on drums is VERY VERY noticable on this disc. It susprised me how much of an influence he had on Rust and Countdown. He style never really changed after those albums, but the thing that blew me away about Nick is his ablilty to really capture the Megadeth beats from ALL albums when played live. Each year has a definite feel to it and he pulled it off well. This CD would've got 4 stars if he was on the record. The new guy...needs to beefen up his snare man. C'mon...IT'S MEGADETH FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!!!
