Megadeth's "Youthanasia" cd, while great sounding and opening with the fairly effective "Reckoning Day", is incredibly awful. Gone are the trademark complex riffs, virtuoso soloing and all-out intensity, only to be replaced by soft, tepid songs with zero passion and seemingly no life. Megadeth now sound like a bunch of jaded, over the hill rockers, who are looking at their bank accounts instead of being the innovators that they once were. "Countdown To Extinction", while not a very good effort either, at least offered some outstanding Megadeth moments (ie the amazing "Ashes In Your Mouth"), albeit without the admittedly strong production featured here on "Youth..." Now, we have a group who have turned their backs on their incredibly loyal fans and tried to follow the "let's do what Metallica did so we can make lots of cash too" attitude that struck so many bands after Metallica released their horrid "Reload", "Load" and "Black" cd's.

It's just so sad that a band as talented as Megadeth could WILLINGLY write such putrid songs, especially after such white hot thrash masterpieces "Rust In Peace" and "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" Everything here seemingly moves to the same 4/4 beat! It's incredibly infuriating, especially knowing that they are capable of stunning, jaw droppingly amazing work! There's not even a hint of the old Megadeth sound. A total waste of time and money, and incredibly disappointing, unless of course, you like when metal bands loose their attitude and fire to write songs as bad as "Et Tout Le Monde"...what a waste of recording tape and time. Strictly for fans of the new direction that Metallica has taken over their last 3 or so cd's. "Rust" in peace, Megadeth... we hardly new ye...
