Nas

God's Son

Nas Awakens (4.5 Stars)

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
This album came out in December of 2002, but it took me back to '96 when I used to get excited about new hip hop releases. Nas returns to that same flavor that made him so loved in the first place. There are some bangers on this album that nearly make it a classic album. Tracks like "Book Of Rhymes", "Warrior Song" feat. Alicia Keys, and "Last Real N*gga Alive" have that indescribable Nas flavor that have you zoning out like you're sitting right next to him while he's kicking rhymes. Nas kicks knowledge to the kids in the long overdue "I Can". And "Made You Look" is just plain sick. It's good to see Salaam Remi making hot beats again.

There are some suspect joints on this album to be found. Though the beat is hot, "Zone Out" has some suspect lyricism on it (thanks to the VERY weak Bravehearts). And maybe I'm the only one, but I'm kind of tired of people "collaborating" with 2Pac, especially when these "collaborations" are with people that Pac considered to be enemies when he was still alive. I could be wrong, but it just seems corny and fake to me. Honestly though, those are really the only complaints I have about this album. Everything else is tight.

This album is somewhat of a throwback to the '95 - '96 era in rap. When I first heard "Made You Look", I dropped everything I was doing and ran straight to Sam Goody and picked up this album. I hadn't done that since 1997. I'm just excited to see Nas getting back to business. Enough rambling from me. Go get this album if you don't have it already (which you should). Also, check out 9th Wonder's remix of this album entitled "God's Stepson". That album is just as tight as this one though it doesn't have all the songs from "God's Son" on it.

Standout Tracks: Book Of Rhymes, The Cross, Made You Look (My Favorite), Mastermind, Last Real N*gga Alive, I Can, and Warrior Song feat. Alicia Keys
