Nas

God's Son

A Mixed Bag

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
After recapturing his career with 2001's Stillmatic, Nas returns with his follow-up LP God's Son.

The reason I call this LP a mixed bag is because it has its fair share of hits and misses. Tracks like "Made You Look", "Mastermind", and "Get Down" are straight fire. The production on these tracks is amazing and Nas comes with the lyricism that made him famous. Songs like "Heaven", "The Cross", and "Dance" (A song made for his late mother) are good songs which lay the backdrop for this LP. My only problem with "The Cross" is Eminem's repetitive production.

Of course Nas has his "I hate Jay-Z" track on this album as well. On "Last Real Nigga Alive" Nas gives you his perspective on the Raekwon/Biggie beef and his own subliminal war with Biggie. He then proceeds to take a couple of shots at arch rival Jay-Z and explain why he feels he's the better mc. "Thugz Mansion" is kind of so-so. I love Nas's verses but I'm sick of postumous collaborations with Tupac. "I Can" has a nice message but it's kind of annoying now that TV and radio killed it. The rest of the songs on this album I don't care too much for. Nas's lyrics on "Book of Rhymes" are decent but the production is awful and boring. Even Alicia Keys couldn't make me like "Warrior Song". She hurts the track more than help it. "Hey Nas" is another track that suffers from bad production. However, the worst track BY FAR on this album is "Zone Out" with the Bravehearts. Why does Nas insist on putting them on his albums? I'm pretty sure that he knows they are garbage.

Overall God's Son isn't a bad album but it's not a great album either. There's a good number of hot songs but then there's a good amount of weak ones too. That's why I called it a mixed bag. The bad songs on this disc were mostly a result of the production. Whereas some tracks had god awful production (Zone Out), some others had beats that were just plain boring. This album would probably make you fall asleep before you finish listening to all of it. Lyrically Nas comes with heat but he just didn't choose production that could keep up with him. WHERE IS PREMO???

Pretty Tight

Not many words to describe the C.D. but "Off the Chains." Nas takes Hip Hop back to the essence of lyrics.
