Nas

God's Son

Third Best Nas Record

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
After Illmatic and The Lost Tapes, this is the best Nas record (better than the much over-rated Stillmatic, Q: How many times do you still listen to Stillmatic?). And let's not compare this record to The Blue Print - Nas and JZ are doing two very different things. This is not a record packed full of summer jams. "God's Son" is Nas' most personal and sincere record yet. Featuring "Illmatic" worthy cuts like "Get Down" and, lyrics alone, "Last Real N Alive." What's more this album is a rarity in hip-hop, it's a real album with developed themes and a consistent sound. Not as over produced as Stillmatic, this record is truly about the lyrics. The listener gets a very distinct impression about what Nas was thinking about when he wrote the songs for this album - not like many other records where you get disjointed insights into the writer, on "God's Son" there are themes that reemerge. One critiscm: Nas you got to cut out all the Christ imagery, let your talent alone self-mythologize, no need to be so explicit. Anyway, with that said, this is a very good record that puts Nas back in the game.
