Upon seeing this in the shops and being aware of his early quality, I raided my piggy bank with desire in my eyes and anticipation in my heart. After removing the wrapping and hearing the whole thing, my heart sank and I lost all respect for Nas. Where are the large beats and sharp hooks? What happened to the profound lyrics? It seems that Nas is delusional, heralding himself as some sort of millenial 'Ghetto Messiah' and although the hood is his background and inspiration, we part with our money expecting a little more innovation and diversity. But, ladies and gentlemen, it's not all bad. 'Nastradamus', 'Shoot-em-up' and 'New World' all display signs that the old Nas is still stirring within - these are quality tunes through and through. The real problem probably lies with record companies jumping on the hip hop bandwagon with artists forced to churn out tired old albums under contractual duress - as a result the quality suffers. So maybe Nas isn't to blame because as long as the consumer still buys blindly (like I did) then the market will be saturated with imitation, suspect 'hip-STop'. It may not be entirely your fault but look Nas, I paid thirteen pounds for three good tracks; as far as I'm concerned you owe me a ten pounds - "Owe me back like money I spent!"
