Nas

Stillmatic

A little more hyped then it should have been

I'm not hating on Nas. I remember when I first got Illmatic, it almost seemed as if I sat in my room just listening to the lyrics getting small things later on. Illmatic is probably the definition of a hungry MC. Nas had skills bred straight from the street corners, before hip-hop became a flossy and glossy genre of music with candy ass lyrics and the best beats in the world, where the production was essential, but mic prowess was the true bread winner. The beats are probably some of Nas's best, and he does have some undeniable classics on this CD, but that doesn't make the CD a classic. On a classic CD, you can usually listen to about every song and there's probably two songs that have to grow on you, but they usually do. One Mic, 2nd Childhood, Rewind, and the intro were first rate, songs I've been waiting on for a long time from Nas. And The Flyest with AZ is gangsta'd out. But this CD isn't as compact as it could be, the songs at the end of the album kind of slowed it down, and, in my opinion, Jay-Z won the battle with Takeover. Don't get me wrong, everybody including me was all over Ether when it first hit the streets. But whereas Jay-Z kind of sounds like he's sort of spitting only true fact, most of which he can back up, Nas just
seems to be throwing kiddie style "Well at least I don't have..."
type rants at him. Still one of the best lyricists out there, Nas has to get rid of the filler in his albums, do what it is he does best, writing street poetry, and stop promoting his Braveheart crew, because they aren't goin' nowhere anytime soon, and some of the last few songs could have been first rate if it weren't for them.

Masterpiece in every sense of the word, hip-hop classic.

Nas's previous two albums I Am and Nastradamus were both sub-par releases, but Nas has returned to his roots brilliantly with his new album [ ... read complete review ]
