Nas

Stillmatic

Really 4 1/2 but...

Finally the real Nas shows up again. After being kidnapped by Mobb Deep on "It Was Written", hanging with P-Dummy, Timbaland, DMX and other hip-hop sellouts on "I Am", and completely loosing his freakin' mind on "Nastradamus", Nasir Jones finally resurfaces from his journey through hell. While this album doesn't have the perfection of "Illmatic", it might've if there was a little more editing. After all, Illmatic was barely 40 minutes. If Nas had taken the time to dump the ill advised pop attempt of "Rule" followed by the uninspiring "My Country" this album would've gotten a full 5 stars from me. There is no need for me to go over the obvious favorites but I am amazed to see so little mention of "Every Ghetto". This song literally brought me back to an era pre-Illmatic when I loved hip-hop more than life. It's probably somewhat of an acquired taste but for anyone who has been more than a casual hip-hop listener prior to 91 this song is classic. For once, believe the hype...Buy it.
