Nas

Street's Disciple

Great but too long (3.5 stars)

Save for the horrible album cover this album is on point. I wasn't expecting this album to be good because when you're dealing with Nas you usually get two or three weak albums for every dope one and considering that Stillmatic and The Lost Tapes were hot to death and God's Son wasn't anything special I was afraid Street Disciple would follow suite. I was (kind of) wrong.

Production wise I'm loving the fact that Nas uses relatively unknown beatsmiths (including himself). I'm starting to get frustrated with CD packaging that includes a big-ass sticker saying "production featuring Neptunes, Kanye West and Jazze Pha!" The lyrics on here are nuts. He blows any self-proclaimed lyrical genius like Jigga, Em or Jada out the water and re-establishes himself as the true streets' poet. He spits fire over tracks like "A Message To the Feds" "Disciple" and "Sekou Story". His lyrics are honest, gritty, grimey and he's got more metaphors in his pinky finger than Oprah Winfrey has cars for her studio audience.

That's the good, now the bad. This album is too long. Nobody in hip hop history (save Biggie) can pull off the double LP because it is just too much. Outkast failed, Wu failed, Jigga failed. Nobody can do it except Big, God love him. Like virtually every double rap LP out there both albums boast strong cuts that you love and repeat over and over right next to weak cuts that are begging to be skipped. Why don't these cats just take the best jams off of the two albums and combine them to make a super voltron album??? It boggles the mind but I suppose such is the mind of a money-grubbing musician. I mean do you really want to pay the extra four bones for songs that otherwise would have landed on the cutting room floor because they weren't that good in the first place?? No.

Maybe I'm just bitter about having to pay extra for music I don't want to listen to but for the strength of this album your money will be well-spent. You can't really go wrong with Nas if you're looking for dope lyrics and while the beats are often hit and miss this is a good listen nonetheless. Just make sure the track skip button on your discman is fully functional because you're going to encounter a lot of filler.

PS - this website needs to develop a way for people to rate things X.5 out of 5 because, like in this case, 3's too low but 4 is too high... it's smack dab in the middle i.e. 3.5.
