Well, I think there are plenty of reviews of this album as it is. As a possible buyer, you've probably already made up your mind. But seeing as the demographic review here is a bit one-sided, I thought I'd add a spectator's opinion. I'm essentially, and for all practical purposes, a METALhead. I don't listen to a lot of hip-hop, nor do I claim to be a background aficianado or historical buff. This album just emoted a nice vibe. Subjectively and objectively alike, this album kicked. But being that most hip-hop is based on feeling/vibe rather than musical virtuosity, that's the basis on which my review extended itself. Along with Mos Def and The Roots, I like the extra-musicality involved with the sampling; strings, horns, guitars etc, more Rhythm & Blues based instruments (I'm talking Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, not Usher). It adds a realistic touch to the music. Makes it real and more "street", if I'm allowed to say that as white guy (haha). By comparison, Chingy or something sounds more commercial and just completely fabricated. Yeah it's "fun", but sounds more robotic than anything else. And as I can't empathize necessarily with the lyrical content of this album, it defintely sounds more thought out and intellegent (although I counted several times where Nas was completely hypocritical with his lyrics). I only gave it four stars becuase of the ever-present "filler" song on almost every hip-hop record. The songs that he threw in at the last moment that didn't take much effort and are lyrically sub-retarted. All in all a good record!
