The Lost Tapes is a collection of exactly what the title says it is. These are songs that didnt get put on the final cuts of Nas's albums and theres several reasons for that. You can only put a limited amount of music on an album and good rappers usually record more than 20-30 songs for an album. Certain songs didnt fit their albums' vibes, etc. Trust me, The Lost Tapes is not just a buncha unreleased songs thrown together so that Nas and his labels can put some money in their pockets. This album is truly great hip-hop. Id say that this is probably Nas's 2nd or 3rd Best album (Illmatic being his best). For the most part the sound (production and lyrics) of the album is soft, laid-back, and relaxin. A few tracks are lively/energetic . The cd opens up great with "Doo Rags" and Nas delivers intelligent/conscious lyrics about life in the hood. "No Idea's Original" is a powerful song and has one of the best hooks ive heard in a hiphop song. Its an inspirational song with a good message. "Blaze A 50" showcases Nasir Jones's dope story telling skills and "Purple" is the introspective and inspirational Nas that hiphop needs more of instead of commerical Chingys and J-Kwons. In "Black Zombie" Nas talks about the the social position of African Americans and its inspirational to other races as well. "Poppa Was A Playa" is a song about Nas's father and his life as a womanizer but Nas also shows respect for him. When we move to the bonus track, "Fetus", Nas does somethin very creative. With the help of Kanye West's production he raps about the situations that surround him while hes still in his mom's womb. Overall this is a great album and im glad Nas released these songs. But i have to say the best track are "My Way" (Nas informs us about his life tryna move out the ghetto and the struggle to straighten up his life), "Doo Rags", and "No Idea's Original". The Lost Tapes is full of great lyricism and good production. the street poet Nas shows us why hes the king of NY and one of the best ever in rap music. Cop this ish right NOW.

His second best album...Still nasty after all

When "Doo Rags" jumped off, I knew it was golden. I knew he had returned despite rumors of falling off mentally from the mountain of Hip Ho [ ... read complete review ]
