Nas's Lost Tapes

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Nas is the best living rapper right now. He seems to uniquely combine stories of the streets into a lyrically exciting and intense visualization of how it was back then. Nas's newest album The Lost Tapes, is a recollection of tracks that were rejected off of "I Am" and "Stillmatic". I absoulutely love Nas...period. "Illmatic" is one of the best albums every made,
"It Was Written" is also amazing..."Nastradamus" got a little slow but still good, "I Am" was a tad mainstream but again very good and then we return to Nas's claim to fame of "Stillmatic" a lyrically provocotive look on Nas's battle with Jay-Z with "Ether" to "One Mic", "Got Urself a Gun", "Rule", "Rewind", "Smokin'", and "Stillmatic". So when i heard Nas would be releasing "The Lost Tapes", I seemed almost a little dissapointed that he was going that unfaithful road of collecting older tracks and not making a new album. However, because it was Nas, i had no doubts. I bought the album and was literally blown away by the quality and meaning that every song has. HOW THESE SONGS WERE CUT ARE TOTALLY STUPEFYING TO ME. Let's start off with "Doo Rags" an amazingly catchy song that truly shows the creation of rap and a morally uplifting song. This song is better than many rappers first singles. Next is "My Way", a song that talks about Nas's rise to the top. A little self explanatory, but you can feel his older roots, he talks about the things he has and about where he came from. A beatiful song...very entertaining. Then skipping one song to number 4, the best song i think on the album..."Nothing Lasts Forever". This song if it was released on national airwaves would without a doubt be number 1....extremely sensational song about how things change. Nas talks about the hood in how it was and now as he drives to it now, it is torn down with shopping malls. Every word in this song is brilliant and the album is that much better because of it. Other notable songs are "Black Zombie", "Drunk By Myself", and "Fetus"...without a doubt this album is for hardcore fans, but there is something in here for everybody. Truly i would rank this above "I Am" and "Nastradamus" and for an album of rejected songs, one wonders why they were rejected in the first place. Put it this way, if you feel a little reluctant to pay 15 dollars for a cd of older songs when "God's Son" is coming out soon, don't! This is truly worth ure buck and it will be a highly played cd in your collection. Truly amazing album...if you like rap (the real kind not Nelly up in herreeeee) you will love "The Lost Tapes".
