Neil Young is one of those prolific artists who keeps turning out quality material with almost every outing. Silver and Gold is another example of this. Neil's forte has long been simplicity. Just him, a guitar and his sweet, slightly off key vocals. This album is as basic as it gets in that respect. It is very soft and quiet. There is a charm about Neil that is hard to explain. He has always been a wonderful songwriter. Distant Camera and the title cut are prime examples of this gift. Also from these same sessions but not included on this effort are the songs from the CSNY reunion album, Looking Forward. Specifically, the touching Slowpoke. If these cuts had been included on Silver and Gold we would have been talking instant classic. As it is, it is one of Neil's most beautiful albums to date. He is certainly one of our most enduring treasures. Silver and Gold is also a treasure and will be remembered for years to come.
