It's like this...Neil's found another room in his voice and he's checking out the view from all the windows. Most compare this album to "After the Goldrush", but I hear a little "Hawks and Doves" and the faint suggestion of "American Stars and Bars". "Without Rings" is by far one of Young's finest new works: intoned, gravelly and uncharacteristically baritone. The lyrics are unstrained and unfettered. Young's guitar playing is equally unstrained, at times bright and inventive. It's the kind of album where you can hear the wood, smell the dust and taste the salt on Neil's fingers.
