if you're a neil young fan, "silver and gold" will remind you of his very best work, right up there with "after the gold rush." if this is your first foray into neil-land, this cd is a wonderful introduction. the overall sound is similar to "comes a time" which in itself harkened back to his work from the early 70's. the tunes are melodic, pleasing and beautiful; the lyrics are meaningful, wise and literate; the arrangements are spare and thoughtful. while young assembled a field of vets to play on the album, all you hear is neil, and he shines. he is clearly comfortable playing this blend of folk-country, and seems to be in a mood that's both cheerful and retrospective. he sings and plays with a touch that brings a lightness and charm to every song. i've been hitting the repeat button after "without rings," the last song on the cd. "Silver and gold," "razor love" and "without rings" are remarkable. if you're thinking about buying this cd, don't waste any more time thinking. buy it and you will not be disappointed.
