Ok. Toumas Holopien, the keyboardist, is the one that writes most of the music. The fact that most of the music is created by the keyboardist, gives a different perspective and makes it DIFFERENT for a metal band. First of all, Nightwish has always had elements of different types of music. I own all their material. I'm a metalhead BUT I listen to many other types of music so I don't have prejudices against this band. Most of the 1 star reviews come from the same racist and ignorant moron. The rest of the 1 star, 2 stars and 3 stars reviews, come from metalheads that listen to this comparing it with other metal bands. That's wrong. Always remember that speed and technical quality does not always mean the best music. Nightwish, in my opinion, is not 100% metal. The do have a lot of power metal. Guitar/keyboard solos and double bass. Most of their 3 first albums have a lot of it. But since Century Child, they have been getting into a different style. The guitar almost disappeared and the "orchestra sound" was more important. The "neoclassical Metal" began with the guitarist Malmsteen that released some albums in which he played Bach, Beethoven, etc and he did it with the help of and orchestra. However, it doesn't mean that Nightwish is not original. Also, Nightwish changes with the time. They evolve(And that is not common with the power metal bands). This album also has variety. It has aggressive and quiet songs. Also, some songs are into Power Metal again. There are even some moments in which they play progressive Metal. Tarja is solid, like always.
This band has always been bashed. Fortunately I listen to almost every type of music. That means that I don't have false expectations. The fact that this band doesn't sound like other Metal bands doesn't mean is bad. I'm sorry, but most of the 1,2 and 3 stars reviews come mostly from people that only want something at a million miles per hours. 'Neoclassical Metal' was created before, that's true, but Nightwish is still unique. The fact that they are Europeans doesn't mean is bad either. That's just ignorance and lack of culture.
Toumas Holopien and Nightwish are still looking for their 'ultimate result'. Holopien's creative capacity is amazing. One thing is clear. We still don't listen to the best of Nightwish.
