The Fragile

Pretty solid but not his best

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
The Fragile is probably NIN's most ambitious album, and it's branching out much farther musically than the roots established with Pretty Hate Machine. What I like about it: there aren't any really weak tracks. Every song feels like it fits into a bigger picture, and every song is interestingly different and innovative. What I don't like about it: the best tracks seem like they could be a lot better. "The Wretched", "Into the Void", "Somewhat Damaged" - all start out great sounding but seem to go nowhere as songs. The music isn't that catchy, although the sounds and texture are very interesting. I think both PHM and TDS were better albums in that they'll probably get more playtime from me - they have many more solid "single" songs. But "The Fragile" is good in a different sort of way - as an album, rather than as a collection of singles.
