No Doubt

The Singles 1992-2003

"The Singles 1992-2003" (original title, huh?)

I cannot honestly remember when I first heard about No Doubt. Being thirteen, I obviously had not listened to anything from "No Doubt", "Tragic Kingdom", or "Return Of Saturn". I heard all four singles from "Rock Steady" numerous times on the radio. I thought that they were pretty good, but I never got around to buying the album...

Then I heard "It's My Life" in the radio. I loved it (as well as the awesome video). However, I figured that no album accompianied it, so I just downloaded it. Anyway, while watching the video on VH1, I dicscovered that it was from "The Singles 1992-2003". I was skeptical at first, because I figured the CD would be "It's My Life", four way overplayed songs from "Rock Steady", and a bunch of horrible old songs. But I was at the mall last week and it was on sale for 12.99, so I decided to pick it up...

"Don't ya think I know exactly where I stand...this world is forcing me to hold your hand..."
In a sharp and sarcastic dig at society, No Doubt creates a awesome pop rock song with excellent lyrics.

"It's my life, don't you forget...it's my life, it never ends..."
As I mentioned before, this is an terrific song.

"I'm the kinda girl that hangs with the guys, like a fly on the wall with the secret eyes..."
I never realized how pop this song is, but it's still good. I especially like the Bounty Killer rap.

"I still love to wash in your old bathwater...make my feel like ya couldn't love another..."
I really like this song. The chorus is very catchy and the lyrics are cool.

"You came in with the breeze...on Sunday Morning..."
This is a great song, though not as good as the four before it. It's about Gwen's break up with one of the guys in the band and how he started to annoy her one Sunday morning...

"You'll be feelin' hella good so let's just keep on dancing...you won't feel like ya should so I'm gonna keep on dancing"
This is an awesome, though overplayed song. There is too much music in my opinion.

"Don't let it go away...this feeling has got to stay...don't let it go away..."
This song was originally recorded for the movie "Go" and I think it's very nice. Good lyrics and sweet vocals.

"You've used up all your coupons and all you've got left is me...and somehow I'm full of forgiveness, I guess it's meant to be..."
Though killed by the radio, this is still a good slow jam. It recently won a Grammy for best pop perforamnce by a duo or group I think. Like with "Hey Baby", I enjoy the rap a lot.

"Excuse Me Mr...I'm in line to buy time..."
This is a great punk ska song. It starts out very punk rockish, but then there is a very ska bridge. However, it becomes punk again after the bridge.

"Keep holding my hand...so we don't get seperated..."
This is a very sweet song, it almost sounds like a sweet lullaby. I guess it was too slow for radio though (it was the only commercial flop from "Rock Steady").

"And it's all your fault...I screen my phone calls...no matter who calls, I gotta screen my phone calls..."
This is a A+ song...it has catchy lyrics and a great beat. The "spiderweb" metaphor is very clever.

"And all I wanted was a simple kind of life..."
This is a very laid-back song. This is obviously very personal to Gwen, but I'm not sure if I like it...I doesn't sound very No Doubtish, if you know what I mean.

"Don't speak, I know what you're saying, so please stop explaing, don't tell me cause it hurts...Don't speak, I know what you're thinking, and I don't need your reasons, don't tell me cause it hurts..."
Oh. My. God. I honestly cannot give this 4 minute masterpiece enough praise. The best song on this disc? Yes! The best song on the album it came from? Yes! The best No Doubt song ever? Yes! One of the best songs ever? Probably. When Gwen sings, "Don't tell me cause it hurts", you can feel the pain in her voice. It's that raw; it's that real.

"I kinda alway knew I'd end up you're ex- girlfriend...I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them..."
This is a good song. Like "Excuse Me Mr.", it is very punkish. Gwen even half raps in it.

"Trapped in a box...I'm trapped in a box..."
OMG, a pretty unorthodox way to end the album. I guess it's a good song; I don't know much about ska so I don't really know. It seometimes scares me...

All in all, "The Singles 1992-2003" is an excellent purchase that you should buy right away. I know I will be buying all of No Doubt's albums in due time.
