I originally bought Tragic Kingdom as a cassette because it would be awhile before I upgraded to a CD player. I would rewind my favorite songs over and over again. This particular album is their best, although I love their others.
The reason is because it seems to be a combination of sounds that they experimented with on their two albums prior to it and a stepping stone to their two albums following its release. Normally, this kind of album would come later in artists' careers, but this one landed right at the beginning of their break-through.
You can still feel the hint of ska and reggae on the tracks. Stefani's voice may not be the equivalent of a "diva," but it certainly is unique and well-suited for this kind of music. The only songs that I really don't listen to are "Happy Now", "The Climb", and "Sixteen." Occasionally, I'll even listen to them.
This is just a great album that will keep you hooked on No Doubt. It influenced me to buy their first two albums and then their most recent ones when they were released.
