Oasis

Be Here Now

Bloated

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
The main thing that killed this album is that there are decent four-minute pop songs concealed in an average of 6 and sometimes even 9 minutes of repetition. It's unfortunate that the cocaine got to the entire band so much that they didn't bother to edit the album into the magnificent follow-up to "Morning Glory" that was waiting to burst out.
There are massive guitars on all of these guitars, a huge wall of sound that sounds great nice and loud. Unfortunately, Oasis got too laid back and took their sweet time with nearly all of these songs. Not that they've ever done a fast three minute rocker, but a lot of these songs would have sounded much better in that fashion.

D'You Know What I Mean?: almost eight minutes of huge guitars and arrogant lyrics, great opener. A+
My Big Mouth: a roaring rocker, hilariously over-the-top lyrics. A
Magic Pie: the melody is brilliant, could have been so much better minus about three minutes. B+
Stand By Me: not the Ben King classic, but a great song nonetheless. A-
I Hope, I Think, I Know: more arrogant lyrics, and a lenght that begs editing. B+
The Girl in the Dirty Shoes: could have been SO good with a shorter ending!! this way, just merely good. A-
Fade In-Out: Johnny Depp drops by and lays down a competent slide guitar. menacing good song, but again, way too long. B+
Don't Go Away: classic Oasis, great song altogether, and a lenght that fits. A
Be Here Now: *sigh* more editing...this is getting boring. A-
All Around the World: if you're gonna try to do another "Hey Jude" at least have a brilliant outro. good song, decent outro, but waaaay too long. A-
It's Getting Better (Man!!): not really. a song this anthemic cannot trudge for seven minutes. B+
All Around the World (Reprise): aww heck, let's stretch the song to eleven total minutes. B-

I think it's a genuine shame that these songs are so bloated, because there's real good songs getting dragged down in their lenght: four seven-minute songs and one nine-minutes, this album just goes on too long and killed Oasis' megastardom. Of course, the anticipation for this album was deafening: you were expecting Jesus himself to show up in London on August 26 to pick up the album. There is no excusing the absurd lenght, especially after the lean and mean 50 minutes of "Morning Glory". I am willing to bet that had this album been about 20 minutes shorter, it would be much more acclaimed. Terrible shame, I'd love to see a sober version of it.
