...no matter who would've recorded it. the fact that its oasis makes it worse. however heinous & arrogant noel gallagher and the other apes were about how they saved rock and roll etc., the thing that saved them from being nothing but self inflated clods is that noel's songs generally lived up to the hype. not here, laddie. this is a collection of weak material, lyrically & musically. noel tries to cover up that fact with dense overdubbing & general noodling, which makes it sound like pointless soloing in search of a song. the ballads are obvious, sappy, and poorly written (ex: dont go away has perhaps one of the dumbest choruses i've ever heard-"dont go away/say what you'll say/say that you'll stay/forever and a day"-was this written in kindergarten?) with this album, noel bought into the hype the fawning critics threw his way-that he was a genius. he continued the path he started with the wildly overrated but good morning glory toward becoming an "artist", when all oasis is, was, and ever could be is a ROCK AND ROLL BAND!!...delusions of grandeur do not necessarily make "art". the strengths of definitely maybe, one of the best rock records ever made, are completely gone by this, only their third release! even liams vocals, the most important element of the groups sound, are dulled down. oasis stumbled very badly, & have yet to recover.
