It's said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's true, then the Beatles should be very flattered by Oasis. The similarities to the Beatles were not unintentional. Oasis made a point of letting everyone know that they were attempting to replicate them and become the new Beatles.
While I'm not a big Beatles fan (I'm more into the Rolling Stones), it's clear that Oasis's imitation on "Definitely Maybe" falls short of a true Beatlesque work. They come through with a few solid songs like "Live Forever", "Rock 'n' Roll Star", and (my favorite) "Supersonic"; but, the majority of the songs on "Definitely Maybe" sound more like the stylings of some of the Beatles lesser known British Invasion compatriots.
Oasis has made a better showing through the years and have grown as musicians. "Definitely Maybe" is a good start but far from a favorable comparison to the band's heroes.
