Their debut album was hailed as brilliant. However, my belief is that the hype surrounding a band to resurrect rock n roll was so great that it was blown out of proportion. Definately Maybe is a solid album with some classic tunes - but, as a start-to-finish record, it is not as classic as it follow up, the truly amazing What's The Story Morning Glory.
The three definitive anthems on the album are Live Forever, Supersonic and Cigarettes + Alcohol. They are all big sing-a-longs, which you would find even more of on the next album.
Oasis made no bones about their influences - making it very difficult to critisise them, however the production on the album was not up to scratch.
It's way of success was the way it connected with it's British generation - as opposed to the American generation. 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' sums up the sort-of careless air of the young British working-class, 'Supersonic' represented the anger angst of the generation, and the whole album sees from inside the trap which Britain's working class is in, without seeking to depress or critisise it.
It is worth owning, definately, but Morning Glory was where they would perfect the formula.
