Oasis

Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

I'd Actually Give It 3 1/2 Stars, But That's Not an Option

After the relative disaster that was "Be Here Now," Oasis get back on track with a solid effort. The overall mood is a bit more dark and reflective than their previous albums, you probably won't be throwing this on at a party. "Sunday Morning Call" is probably the best embodiment of that sentiment. The song is almost nursery-rhyme-like in its simple beauty, but there's also a layer of sadness that it quite evident in the song. Ditto to "Little James". The one song that breaks that mould is also the stand-out track: "Go Let It Out" is a well-crafted song that's decidedly more rock than roll. Also, some albums come with a bonus disk which has "Go Let It Out" and "Let's All Make Believe." Having two copies of the same song on a single album is a bit ridiculous, but "Let's All Make Believe" is a stunningly beautiful song about wanting to return to the ease and simplicity of childhood. All in all it's a pretty consistent album, but there's still not much to drag a casual fan back into the band.
