Oasis

Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

Bad title, great record

It always surprised me that people consider Oasis to be a bunch of Beatles rip-off wannabes, because other than highly catchy songs, superb production, and tons of ambition, they really don't have that much in common.

That said, SOTSOG is probably the one Oasis CD that actually DOES sound like the Beatles. The third track sounds a ton like a sitar-filled India-influenced George Harrison song. The final track has an amazing guitar solo that has a tone quite reminescent of the one Harrison used on his big hit Something. And the lead single Go Let it Out makes heavy use of same sound/instrument you hear in the intro to Strawberry Fields Forever. I find all of this to be quite awesome, because its like Oasis is laughing in the faces of all the music critics who called them Beatles wannabes by sounding more like the Beatles than ever.

Despite the influences, SOTSOG is still hardly a Beatles knock-off CD, as is evident since the first track kicks in, a rocking instrumental that reminds me of the equally awesome Setting Sun, the famous collaberation between Noel Gallagher and the Chemical Brothers. Songs like I Can See A Liar just out and out rock, and Where Did It All Go Wrong is simply an amazing bitter rock song, maybe one of the best on the album. The final track is simply a must hear, and Gas Panic makes a great slow anthem.

Its not a perfect album like Oasis's 1st two discs, but its close. Its probably not as experimental as it should have been, and there is a noticeable change in production that seems to take out some of the raw energy that Oasis had in the past. But still, this is Oasis, one of the greatest bands of the 90's, and certainly one of the most ambitious. Check it out.
