Offspring

Americana

A very, very dissapointing effort by the offspring.

Offspring was a solid, consist group up until this point. "Smash" and "Ixnay on the Hombre" were truly excellent. Any fan who bought this cd before "pretty fly (for a white guy)" came out would know. Their first 2 LPs, "The Offspring" and "Ignition" were good too, but "Americana" is absolutely horrible. Anyone who thinks this is punk rock is very disillusioned by the ideals of punk. In fact, most of Offspring's work aren't truly punk anyway, but their songs were good before. Now, as for this cd, one song is great, which is "The Kids Aren't Alright." The track, "Americana" is very good, and "Staring at the Sun" is alright as well. On the other hand, the rest of this cd is just plain bad. Their 'experiments' are not to try something new, but to have a more mainstream sound. By my definition of selling out, the Offspring sold out. If you asked a hardcore punk fan, they would have said they went to a major record or just stopped making pure punk songs. Anyway, I'd avoid this cd, and try any of their older works, partularly "Smash" or "Ixnay on the Hombre."
