Overkill

The Years Of Decay

Classic thrash for thrashers

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Released in 1989, this was a triumph for East Coast thrash band Overkill, who, although never popular in the mainstream (heaven forbid), continue to earn a devoted following in the underground. THE YEARS OF DECAY covers the spectrum of thrash styles: progressive riffing on 'Time to Kill', full-speed assault on 'Elimination' and 'Nothing to Die For', Sabbathy sludge on 'Skullkrusher', and ballad material (the title track). It all comes together on the closer 'E.vil N.ever D.ies', which basically does what 'Damage Inc.' does on Metallica's MASTER OF PUPPETS: reminds you that this band came to thrash. Some listeners dislike the vocals of Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth, but I personally don't mind them. The guitar attack, courtesy of Bobby Gustafson, is what mainly carries the album.
