Overkill

The Years Of Decay

Not their best but still worth it.

Overkill's 4th album, and final one with founding guitarist Bobby Guftason. With this album Overkill continues to expand on it's experimentation in de- and re-construction of traditional song structure. The album immediately surprises you by placing the solo of the opening song, "Time To Kill" and the very end instead of the bridge.

Earlier albums showed the band clearly working out new ideas on the stand, but here, the band knows what it wants and how to get there. Unfortunately, this leads to some stagnation from overly-complex arrangements.

But don't count this album out just yet. "Elimination" may very well be the single best single song in the entire Overkill canon. "Evil Never Dies" is a thrilling roller coaster ride of tangled riffs, solos and stop/start tempo changes. And "Skullcrusher" is a 10-minute dirge that succeeds against all odds despide it's near-stationary tempo.

Not their best album - the uninitated should listen to Taking Over and Under The Influence first - but definately a strong album that is an integral part of the Overkill story.
