I'm not sure how highly to recommend this album from the get go, it definetly takes a little getting used to. I first purchased this album at a time when wearing a metallica T-shirt tended to seclude you from crowds and jean jackets were definetly way to popular. Over the years this album has done more then grow on me. It just seems like a staple in Heavy metal, as much a classic as from any other hard rock bands that have entered the lights of main stream popularity or those that still lurk somewhere in the shadows. To get to the meat of it newcomers will probably have trouble getting used to singer Bobby Ellsworth at times shrill voice, at least I did. Still, throughout the album he shows a diversity, as does the whole band, to really incorporate diffrent styles and still not loose the inclusive attitude the songs maintain. From the Thrash and often silly Time to Kill and Elimination to the more introspective and acoustic Years of Decay, to the down right bad a** Skullcrusher this album tends to be more then the sum of its parts. On a personnel note Who Tends the Fire is what slow brooding metal is all about. So if your looking for something not always break neck, sometimes silly, sometimes serious, always entertaining overkill is a great grab.
