Pantera is just too good. They had a bit of a slump before this album came out (Vulgar Display of Power), but recovered in true fashion with the release of Far Beyond Driven. On this one, they are significantally heavier than on Cowboys From Hell and on Vulgar Display. Vinnie's drumming is more aggressive, and Rex's bass is far heavier and lower-tuned than on the previous two. Dime's guitar is not as great as on Cowboys and Vulgar, but is still awesome (The best guitar work by Pantera is on their 4th album, The Great Southern Trendkill). The beginning of the album, "Strength Beyond Strength", begins as nothing but a big noise-fest, but becomes much better by the 1:30 mark. The best song on the album is, despite the noise, "Strength Beyond Strength". "Good Friends And A Bottle of Pills" is a funny song about a guy who did something fun to another guy's girlfriend the past night, while "Use my Third Arm" has no truly definitive explanation, while it sounds very good, still. This album is Pantera's 3rd best, but if it is as good as I know it is, and you will, too, once you have bought it, it is still one of the great hard rock albums of the 90's.
