patty's albums have always been a mixed bag. only 1993's "only what i feel" was a winner song after song. still, when patty gets the right material she wrings out more emotion than any other female country singer. who can argue with the power of songs like "a thousand times a day" off "the trouble with the truth" album or "to have you back again" from "long stretch of lonesome". this time, the real winner is "my heart will never break this way again" a tune that epic would be wise to release as the 2nd single.

ballads aside, patty has chosen to tackle some real barn burners in the past. "halfway down" may have been the loudest, most daring song to make the top 10 in a decade. unfortunately, she doesn't take any of those risks on this album. instead, she prefers to stay in the rather tepid middle ground trading in guitars for keyboards.

all in all, about four of the tracks are winners while the others are throwaways. still, the winners are so powerful that they justify the price of admission.
