Driving Rain

Driving me wild again

Macca made a fantastic album with a few unfortunate mistakes. In fact I wanted to give it 4 and a half stars, but I thought then I would be nice and give it 5 instead of 4. So, the highlights:
- Rinse The Raindrops!!! This one made me forgive those mistakes. An incredible "primal scream" song. When I first heard it, it shocked and rocked me. Great thing Macca still can make such masterpieces (a masterpiece it is!). Fantastic guitars, bass and everytihng's perfect! Agree with those who compared it to 'I Want You'. I think I'm beginning to be obsessed by it.
- The musicians. Paul has gathered a wonderful band. Rusty with the guitars and Abe with the drums do an excellent work! (O.k., on most of his albums there are masterful musicians, but I like the new mates, anyway :))
- Orchestration is fortunately all right. Old Macca-songs were often spoiled by the terrible instrumentation, but this time, as on 'Flmaing Pie', he does it good.
- Other highlight songs are: the rocking 'Lonely Raod' and 'About You', 'Heather' (beautiful melody) and 'Your Loving Flame' (classic McCartney ballad).
And now the shady part:
- Spinning On An Axis, is really awful! I mean, surely there're some people who like it, but it's not Macca, and I'm simply averse from hip-hop or that terrible rap crap. Sorry, Sir Paul, you got wrong this time.
- The vocals are a few times really weak. I'm sure with a bit more polishing it would also be fine.
- ?The lyrics? For heaven's sake, I think they're not that bad. We know what he wants to say. And simplicity doesn't always mean primitivity. (Remember what criticism did Lennon get for the lyrics of 'I Want You'? But his response was that you can create up to par music without poetic words and that he had said all he had wanted with the song.)
In general I'm very satisfied with this album, it ROCKS and when I listen to it, I always get my hope back that there is still REAL music in this teeniepop-ruled world. (in fact, I'm also considered to be a teenager with the age of 16, but I don't feel like a typical teenie - fortunately)

Good, not Great

I've always been a big fan of Paul McCartney. Although his post-Beatles work is spotty, each album/disc has had its share of worthwhile son [ ... read complete review ]
