Paul McCartney

Driving Rain

Must Have Been Magic

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
Well, the verdicts are now out. Everything from "best album McCartney has ever recorded" to "complete disaster." The truth is somewhere in between. There is some average filler i.e. "Tiny Bubble", and some total [junk] "Spinning On an Axis".
However, when McCartney hits the target on this album he does so in a significant way. "Lonely Road" and "From A Lover" are powerful worthy songs that let the listener know precisely where McCartney has been over recent years. "Loving Flame" and "Magic" stand alongside the best that he has ever written, both containing tightly controlled but awesome power, the hallmark of his best work over the years.
"Freedom" is simple but it plays its role in the "Give Peace A Chance" mode and it would sound great in a packed stadium. The best moments on Driving Rain put the power back into pop and extend the honest conversation that McCartney has been having with his audience for many years. If you listen to this album and don't know where he has been recently (emotionally and geographically) then you aint really listening.
