This is a wonderful album. A number of reviewers here and elsewhere have spent a inordinate amount of space finding fault with Paul's lyrics. They're misguided. McCartney's music has never been about great, tightly woven stories with sharp, inventive phrases. At his best, it is his honesty, conviction and emotional connection to his song subjects and his great melodic skill that makes his music special.
I'm happy to say that he has never sounded more connected and energized than he does in Drivin Rain. If anyone needed more evidence that Sir Paul can rock, after his album, the defense rests. Musically, this is a muscular album that gives each song space to make its point. It is also bursting with a high level of creativity and musicianship that you weren't sure Paul was capable of reaching. Much of the credit has to go to David Kahane who has done an excellent job of producing an album that showcases Paul's voice and musical inventiveness while preserving the spontaneity that good rock requires. The sound is usually dense and loud...at times it almost sounds like a live recording. McCartney's bass playing on this record should be required listening for bassists everywhere. This is McCartney like he oughta be.
In fact, this album could almost be a summary of the many diverse musical styles that has made up McCartney's output over his long career. If he were to call it quits right now, he couldn't do much better than to end it with this record. But right now, I hope he never stops.
