Paul Simon

Hearts & Bones

The best from the best

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
This is the least commercially successful of all Simon's solo works, and I'll never know why. It contains some of the best songwriting ever by one of our best pop writers/performers. The title song is as good as Simon gets. Even "Cars are Cars" makes me smile wistfully (one of the rare songs where the bridge makes the meaning -- like "Short People"). And don't ask me why exactly, but "Song About the Moon" is as perfect and diamond-like a lyric as I have ever heard or read. As for sheer sound, "Magritte" still makes me swoon with delight. Oddly enough, the only song that seems to fall short of what might have been Simon's own mark is his tribute to Lennon at the end. It feels unpolished, which probably suits the mood, but unpolished to me means less Simonized, and I want Simon at his best always. I'm still playing "You're the One" at home this week, trying to like it as much, but so far the lyrics are, to me, just not quite Simonesque enough. "Hearts and Bones" will probably always be my fave (and I was a diehard fan right from "The Sound of Silence").
