Paul Simon

Songs From Capeman

Marvelous, beautiful mix of doo-wop and Latin music

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
The play may have failed miserably, but the music from The Capeman shows that Paul Simon has not lost his touch. Beginning with the a cappella Adios Hermanos, which combines a doo-wop style with a choir-boy like harmonies, reminiscent of the earliest Simon and Garfunkel songs, the album is filled with lovely and singable tunes. My favorite is Bernadette, a bopping song of love in the style of the 50s, but other pieces, like Born in Puerto Rico and Satin Summer Nights also get me singing. And Simon shows his further mastery with Can I Forgive Him, a lovely song with his guitar and voice recorded on a home tape recorder that is evocative and touching in its simplicity. Once again, Paul Simon does not disappoint.
