I Wanna Be Your Sledgehammer

Peter Gabriel finally released material that almost sounded radio-friendly, but received a lot of criticism for the "dance-pop" sounds of songs like the huge hit "Sledgehammer." But most Genesis-era Gabriel fans overlooked the wonderful art-rock of "Red Rain," and the dark mystery of "We Do What We're Told." And for all those who were introduced to Gabriel through `So', his other works were hard to listen to. Most likely because `So' was his happiest album to date. The other hits to come from this album included "Don't Give Up," with Kate Bush, and the soul and techno of "In Your Eyes," with Youssou N'Dour. The songwriting, Gabriel's voice, and the musicianship is all wonderful here; combine that with some radio-friendly tunes, and you get the pinnacle of the solo career of Peter Gabriel.
