SO Brilliant
Review Score:

(10/10)
From dated sounding percussions and background singing in Peter Gabriel 4, Gabriel explodes in So with unbelievable rich textures of percussion and foreground clear vocals. No other artist can match Gabriel's: marriage of keyboards to Drums, gift in creating atmosphere and emotional voice!!
Red Rain, about the release of emotional build up, starts with the tapping of hard hats and mystical keyboards tingling, then explodes with Gabriel's emotional voice and an explosion of percussion. Many turns and much passion.
The playful horns of Sledgehammer is Gabriel's tribute to Ottis Redding. If anyone want's to understand Gabriel, pick up OR's greatest hits!
The Ballad Don't Give Up is a duet with Kate Bush in which the woman serves as the strength in the relationship. It features G's tired dispared voice and Bush's fluttering, encouraging voice wrapped in an underpinning of bass.
In Your Eyes, A Love Song which is written in the African custom that can mean love between a man & woman or love or God, is one of G's finest. The pace is kept with G's rich keyboards and drums and the high echoing guitar. This is Gabriel at his best.
Finally, Mercy St. is writtem based on a Anne Sexton poem which deals with her counseling sessions. This soft sung echoing masterpiece is the ultimate in hypnotic soothing. Mercy St. is a place where one is accepted for who they are and, "words support like bone..."
This album is such a masterpiece that 40 years from now it will still sound fresh. One of the most respected Artist at his best. Buy It.
