Peter Gabriel turns out to think, feel, & hurt just like US

A whopping six years and a soundtrack after his blockbuster success with SO (1986), Peter Gabriel returned to pop music with US. Before its release, Gabriel's marriage had just ended, as had as relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette, so he had plenty of inspiration to draw from for the album. "Come Talk To Me," "Blood Of Eden," and "Only Us" were among the more heartbreaking entries on the album, with Gabriel giving such a convincingly pained performance, it made you want to just give him a great big hug. One of the album's hits was in this vein: "Digging In The Dirt", no doubt his scariest performance since "Intruder". US's two other hits were considerably lighter: "Kiss That Frog" was actually quite funny, and for a while it seemed Gabriel was not all that heartbroken about his losses in love; "Steam" returned Gabriel to the Top 40 after a 6-year absence, helped once again by a wonderful video that, contrary to popular belief, was not a knock-off of "Sledgehammer", rightfully regarded as MTV's most-played video. Technology had advanced since then to make "Steam" even more striking than "Sledgehammer". US proved that six years away from the music scene might not seem so bad if you're keeping yourself fully occupied in the meantime. Work on Peter Gabriel's new album (I think it's called UP) is said to be near the home-stretch. OK, Peter, the world's waiting for you!
