Phil Collins

Both Sides

Middle Age Rock Star Album

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
It seems that when some artists get to a certain age, they deliver a personal statement that speaks to the heart much more so than their earlier work may have. Sting did it in 1991 with _The Soul Cages_, and Peter Gabriel did it in 1992 with _Us_; in 1993, Phil Collins took a stab at it. _Both Sides_ is an album that contains songs about growing old, falling in love, falling out of love, and just trying to understand the world in which we live. Sure, Collins had done it before on earlier albums with songs like "I Don't Care Anymore" and "In the Air Tonight" - but it's hard to get more personal than "Can't Turn Back the Years" and "I've Forgotten Everything" from _Both Sides_. This is a very good album of well-written songs. Musically and lyrically, the album may be closer to Genesis' "Hold on my Heart" type of material rather than Collins' "Sussudio". Unfortunately, with no big "hit" from _Both Sides_, the album was considered a flop from Collins in the US - especially after the huge success he had with _But Seriously_ in 1989/1990 and the huge success Genesis had with _We Can't Dance_ in 1991/1992. Regardless, this is a touching, personal album that finds Collins playing all of the instruments and singing from his heart in a way that we have not heard from him since. Its rank is not among Collins' other work, it seems there are a lot of people who have yet to discover this album. You'll probably like it. Pick it up.

This is not a bad album--not at all. It's just a little slow and a little depressing. "Both Sides Of The Story" is a nice song, [ ... read complete review ]
