Hard to judge....

MMMmmm! This one is difficult to review. The songs are there - "Both sides of the story", "Everyday", "We're sons of our fathers", "Survivors", "We fly so close" and "We wait and we wander" are all great. However for this record our Phil decided to play all the instruments himself (a bit like Macca's "McCartney") and the result is a bit mixed. I HATE the drum machine on this record - why on earth does one of the best drummers in the world need a drum machine??! I suppose the lingering thought I've got about Both Sides is how good it COULD have been... With a proper band and slightly better arrangement there's no reason why this couldn't have been as good as "But Seriously". It's not bad though and I get the feeling that the topics Phil covers on Both Sides are far more personal to him; whereas "But Seriously" was more universal in its appeal. I went to see the "Both Sides" tour though and that was great.. "We wait and we wander" live was phenominal and proves that when Phil has a band playing these tracks - they're great. I seem to remember Phil disappearing into a caravan at the end of the show!! Weird...
