Phil Collins

Both Sides

Loneliness personified, sometimes that's what we need.

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
This album IS meloncholy. This album IS maudlin. But sometimes that's what we need. The haunting chordal progressions on We Fly So Close and desperate loneliness Phil divulges really makes you feel. If catharsis is a bad thing, then go buy something else. He puts Evil into a song: Can't Turn Back The Years. Evil defined as neglected or frustrated love. Everytime I listen to this album I hear something new. This is his best work to date. He plays everything on this album himself. It may not make for a very technically excillent album if you want to base music on nothing but chops. But his feeling shines through. This album is like Schindler's List, not the most pleasent thing in the world, but a necessary thing to listen to and learn from. Hey, life isn't all Care Bear movies. Enjoy sadness and loneliness. It's better then drowning in it.
