Phil Collins

Dance Into The Light

A happier, weaker Phil

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (4/10)
I am inexplicably biased in favor of Phil Collins. His work with Genesis led me to Peter Gabriel, and eventually to much more obscure, exciting music than I would have ever discovered without him. Therefore, even when Phil was releasing more commercial music in the late 80s and early 90s, I still rushed out to buy his latest, and liked it more than critics could ever understand.

However, Phil had always managed to keep a bit of a dark side to even his solo material. Up until now. Out of Genesis, divorced from his second wife, 1996's "Dance Into the Light" found Collins abandoning his former darker, moving songs in favor of... well, the title track here, for starters. A horribly ill-advised Bob Dylan remake and "River So Wide," which sounds like a 1996 Clinton campaign speech don't help. In fact, the only track that warranted more than a passing listen here was "Love Police," which somehow wasn't released as a symbol.

Too bad. I always wanted to show all of Collins' critics they were wrong...
